The Future of Our Country Is At Stake

We The People must take action NOW to rid ourselves of this festering boil, this destroyer of the heart and soul of our nation, this butcher of democracy, this fraudulent dictator-king wannabe – BEFORE any further damage is done. If we wait and hope for the best, or if we rely on any other nation to “save” us, it will not end well. Any saving must be initiated from within if we want to avoid catastrophic outcomes. It is our duty to save ourselves.

We must… 

Annul Trump’s entire unlawful presidency. Reverse, revoke, or rescind every appointment, law, and Executive Order made by this charlatan, and fully drain his swamp.

Hold Trump and all of his government enablers accountable. Remove and arrest them for treason, war crimes, and crimes against humanity in the international courts. Eliminate any and all immunity that would prevent this. Those who participated in the dismantling of our democracy and blindly inflicted irreparable harm upon others – all in the name of fanatical ultra-patriotism – must face the same consequences for their actions.

Write irrevocable laws to prevent this kind of travesty from ever happening again. Introduce strict qualification requirements for holding a public office, specifically at the national level, which would include a proven history of ability, knowledge of the Constitution, and a demonstrated respect for the rule of law and due process. Merely allowing someone of a certain age, residency, or voter status to run for office does not ensure anything except demographic eligibility. Disqualify anyone with multiple felony convictions from serving and remove them from office. 

Set maximum term limits for all appointed and elected officials. Public servants must demonstrate working in their constituents’ best interest and not be allowed to make stock trades, accept donations from lobbyists, or otherwise profit from their position while in office or during their campaigns. Lobbying equates to bribery and has the potential to create serious conflicts of interest. Therefore, such personal gain should be illegal, with both the lobbyists and the public servants being held accountable in court.

Dispose of the Electoral College and the multiple party system. Vote for country, not party affiliation. Allow the people to vote in an emergency election to determine the removal a president. 

Forbid hatred and religious dogma from factoring into new laws. Any proposed law that would strip people of basic human rights should be illegal. Restore those rights to ALL people: women, people of color, immigrants, naturalized citizens, tourists. Adopt laws to prevent the removal of human rights protection and provide equality for all genders, races, and ages. Prove to our people and to the rest of the world that our country does not belong on the Human Rights Watchlist.

Government officials should live by the same rules and benefits as their constituents. Their health insurance, holidays and vacations, and retirement should be the same as what is available for everyone else. Focus on ensuring that everyone’s basic needs are met: food, clothing, shelter, and healthcare costs should be reasonable and affordable. Stop viewing tax-supported programs like SNAP and Social Security as hand-outs. They are entitlements. Our tax contributions and our employers’ contributions to those programs throughout our careers makes that our money. 

Rebuild, restore, reinstate. Rebuild the East Wing, restore the Rose Garden, reinstate honors and websites that attempted to erase people from history. Preserve and teach our true history, warts and all, and strive for doing better now and in the future. Restore public lands and wilderness reserves. Rebuild trust and good standing on the world stage. Make amends to those who fell victim to this corrupt regime. “Thoughts and prayers” are not enough in the wake of tragedy. 

Most of all, we must... 

Rebuild trust and faith in each other. As Americans, we must NOT allow anyone to divide us ever again. We cannot allow ourselves to become so full of hate that we lose sight of what makes a country genuinely great. We must build a compassionate and just nation that eradicates rewards for greed and corruption, one that strives for the betterment of our society.  

Be the change you want to see in the world. Change will never happen unless we make it happen. Yes, change can be painful, challenging, or unwanted; but without it, we will never grow. At times, it will seem impossible. It isn’t enough to merely envision or hope for a world where everyone is included, valued, respected, and acknowledged. We must take action to turn that vision of a kinder world into a reality – a world we would be proud for our children and grandchildren to inherit. 

Radical group ideologies have no place in our government. Christian Nationalism and White Supremacy, for example, appeals to and serves a limited population, promotes hatred and exclusion, and works against the greater good. We must choose to open our hearts to all human beings, accept each other, celebrate our differences, and acknowledge that no one group is better than another.

This article is an expression of my personal opinions and an exercise of my First Amendment right to freedom of speech. It is NOT intended to incite violence. I encourage action in the form of making phone calls to legislators, writing letters, posting respectful social media content, and keeping the conversations going. I cannot in good conscience sit down and shut up while our country is being destroyed from within. I will not be silenced.
